Pack your Merkin, Burners, we’re going on a road trip.

Burning Man 2009 - Image 1Whenever I'm planning a summer vacation I always have the Burning Man festival in the back of my mind as a possible destination. Burning Man is an experiment in 'Temporary Community" hosted for a week in Nevada's Black Rock desert. It is a temporary metropolis dedicated to community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance. They depart one week later, having left no trace whatsoever. It's primarily one part arts festival, one part Woodstock, with or without the Peyote. This year's event runs from August 31st through to September 7th.

Burning Man always loses out to something more practical, like the cottage. But how can you not be intrigued by this warning on the official Burning Man website:

"The desert is a place worlds away from that to which most of us are accustomed, and is governed by physical laws that cannot be ignored. You are responsible for your own survival, safety, and comfort. Read this Survival Guide carefully and make sure EVERYONE in your group reads it as well..."

Burning Man is too difficult to explain, but you will experience a sense of community like no other, Hunter S. Thompson style. You will not be the weirdest kid in the classroom, guaranteed (this year you can experience a full-scale functional Raygun Gothic Rocketship). Burning Man is too daunting to explain, but first time 'Burners' can prepare for it by reading the Jack Rabbit Speaks newsletter.

So, if you're the adventurous type, pack your Merkin (please look that up), and head west young Burning Man. Visit www.burningman.com
