Join the Music Revolution! - I did.
If you haven't heard of it, you gotta check it out. If you have heard of it, and use it quite often, please excuse my newbie status on this one. I have recently discovered and have become somewhat addicted to Last.fm – The Social Music Revolution. If you are into music like I am, you'll really, really, appreciate this site.
Last.fm is a great way to have someone (or should I say something) else choose the type music you are in the mood for and play it for hours on end for free. It is also a great way to discover new bands & indie talent that you have never heard of. How does it work? You type in an artist that you feel like listening to and Last.fm will stream not only that artist, but artists that are very similar to that artist, in stereo right to your computer. And yes, it's for free! As it streams, it also displays the artist overview/bio and their current status of touring with tour dates, news and links to buy the music. It also displays how many plays that song has received and how many 'followers' there are for that band.
For example, as I write this BLOG, I typed in The Spill Canvas. The site is now playing artists like The Spill Canvas. So far I have heard: Mayday Parade, Waking Ashland and JamisonParker. Who the hell is JamisonParker? (no space on purpose) I don't know but I am digging it. And so are many others, with 1,397,450 plays and over 61,000 followers, it appears that many know who they are. In case you don't, here's there bio > Jamison Parker was an alternative rock duo in the early to mid 2000s, consisting of singer and guitarist Jamison Covington and guitarist, bassist, and drummer Parker Case, as well as former founder Alex Hovis, who originally founded the project with Jamison.
The real cool thing is Last.fm uses this technology called audioscrobbler which builds a detailed profile of each user's musical taste by recording details of all the songs the user listens to – Meaning the more your listen, the more refined your library will become. Last.fm has been around since 2002 and has over 20 million active users. You can really see how this is truly a 'revolution' as many bands (some not even signed yet) can begin to build huge fan bases online before ever getting a record deal. The world of music is changing and the consumer is finally winning! Oh, gonna fly, Saves the Day just started playing (over 10 million plays & 220,000 followers).
