Thinking back to the first year of college and sitting in class, listening to your professor going on and on about how choosing design as a career choice is going to change the way to take notice of the world, naturally we all were thinking the same thing – sure ok, sounds good. Half way through second year that same teachers asks if we saw the new signage across the street that used some horrendous excuse for a typeface, naturally we all have and it becomes the topic of the morning.
Even as a junior graphic designer, now just finishing third year, I’m noticing and looking for the design aspect of everything. It’s become a little bit of a hobby looking for great design. I’ve taken an interest in the past little while to packaging design. On a trip to the grocery store for example. I’m sure the family has grown tired of the phrase: “wow that has great packaging, lets get it.” I...
It is no secret to my friends and family that I'm in love with the blogging community. It always brightens my day to log onto my Google Reader and see the multitude of new updates by various creatives around the world. After going through every new update the other day and still feeling the need for more I decided to take a peak at all the "Starred" posts i've neglected to go back to. I found a bunch of posts that included some very interesting videos.
And my all time favourite is this one by professor and students in a graphic design program. Shot with a RED One, a Canon EOS 5D Mark II, a Canon EOS 40D, and a Nikon D80. All typography was made out of jell-o, potatoes, squash and other random items.
As newspapers continue to merge, close and go bankrupt it begs the question, 'What can save them?'. Well this designer believes that good design can save a newspaper and he has some impressive readership stats to prove it. My question would be, 'Did the ad revenue follow suit?' Nevertheless, this is well worth watching.
As we put the finishing touches on a brand destination tourism campaign for a client, I thought I would take a few minutes to share a couple of examples that we came across in our research. Take this opinion with the understanding that as an ad-person I can be a bit cynical when I look at others work. But know this, I will be the first to give credit where credit is due (in my opinion of course). Perhaps it’s a little bit of jealously – after all, we haven’t had the privilege of charging $50,000 for a logo design/brand-mark.
Destination Tourism Brand-Mark – Wisconsin Hard to imagine getting paid $50,000 for this logo/slogan. There are just so many things wrong with it. Then again, never being to Wisconsin, maybe it’s right on mark. Nevertheless, it doesn’t make me want to go there. However, I would have if I got the $50 large for the job.
As some of you may or may not already know our shop are big proponents of the ExpressionEngine content management system. Here are some recent links and articles I have come across related to ExpressionEngine, if you have more to share that aren't listed here, please leave us a comment.
The ExpressionEngine showcase section on their website has recently been updated and revamped, they added over 100 new sites to the gallery, and tweaked the navigation to make stumbling around a lot easier.
On the heels of the clearly defunct Jambor-EE, comes Devot-ee.com. Devot-ee aims to be the definitive non-EllisLab run resource for all things relating to ExpressionEngine and, as they grow, CodeIgniter. From basic stuff all the way up to advanced help for developers. EE and CI have a long way to grow, so there is plenty of opportunity to educate as...
